Iowa State's institutional site license for Grammarly has lapsed and will not be renewed. If you are seeing pop-ups indicating that Grammarly has expired, this is why. Accounts tied to the university subscription are no longer active.

Why the change

The decision reflects a broader shift in the writing-support landscape. With the widespread adoption of large language models—such as ChatGPT and similar tools—students, faculty, and staff now have access to a wide range of resources for improving and refining their writing. In that changed environment, the university determined that a dedicated Grammarly site license was no longer the most effective use of resources.

If you'd like to keep using Grammarly

There is no negotiated or institutional pricing available. Anyone who wishes to continue using Grammarly may purchase a subscription directly from the company at its advertised price. For university-related use, a p-card should be used in accordance with normal purchasing procedures.

Removing Grammarly from your device

If you no longer wish to use Grammarly, you can remove it using the steps below for whichever version you have installed.

Browser extension (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari)

• Chrome / Edge: Right-click the Grammarly icon in the toolbar and select Remove from Chrome / Uninstall, or go to the browser's Extensions page, find Grammarly, and clickRemove.
• Firefox: Go to about:addons, open the Extensions panel, find Grammarly, and click Remove.
• Safari: Open Safari → Settings → Extensions, uncheck Grammarly to disable it, then go to Finder → Applications, select Grammarly for Safari, and move it to the Trash.

Grammarly for Windows / Mac (desktop app)

• Windows: Quit Grammarly from the system tray, then right-click the Start button, choose Apps and Features, select Grammarly for Windows, and click Uninstall.
• Mac: Click the Grammarly icon in the menu bar and select Quit, then go to Finder → Applications and move Grammarly to the Trash.

Microsoft Office add-in (Word and Outlook)

• Close Word and Outlook first. On Windows, open Apps and Features (or Control Panel → Programs and Features), select Grammarly for Microsoft Office Suite, and click Uninstall. On Mac, open Word, go to Insert → My Add-ins, select Grammarly, click the three-dot menu, and choose Remove.

Uninstalling Grammarly does not affect or delete any of your existing documents.
